The so-called portraits of Fayún (Egypt) are the collection of portraits of older individuals we know from antiquity. Portraits in its modern sense, as an exact representation, or what it wants to be, of a human visitor in his human condition, neither divine nor regal.

In traditional Egyptian painting the full face of the portraits was never seen, because the front view opened up the possibility of its opposite. The so-called "Egyptian profile" of paintings and reliefs was a way of maintaining a "profile of eternity" in the portraits, which thus maintained the link between life in this world and life in the hereafter. Meanwhile, Faium's portraits show women, children and men dressed face-to-face or three-quarters.
